And we are done

It seems like we just started working on our service learning project a couple weeks ago, but it has been over a month and we are done.  Our event went really well and we raised a decent amount of money for the Boys and Girls club.  Everyone at our cornhole tournament seemed to have a lot fun and everything went really smooth.  The best thing about it was how organized we seemed to be for not even knowing how many people were coming; although we did start a little later then originally planned.  I can attribute our success to the rules we set at the beginning of the project.  According to the structuration theory, a groups success comes from the rules and regulations they set up at the beginning of the group meeting.  I can say that we followed these rules very well and that really contributed to everything going well.  I can't believe all the planning and all the meeting finally are over for the service learning project.

Back in Action

I got back to Indiana two days ago and I can say I miss it already. Some other people and I went to Daytona for spring break and had a blast.  I was really suprised that over half of the people I met down there were from Purdue, so that was pretty sweet.  Daytona, Florida was sunny and  warm and was a lot of fun, but it's back to business.

I feel like we have a lot of things to do to get ready for project day and it is getting close; two weeks from now and we will have be all ready.  While we do have a lot to do as a group, I feel like our group will get things done without a problem so I'm not getting stressed out.  The only thing that will hurt our progress will be the fact that we all have other classes and other things that we need to get done besides Com 320, but we have done well so far so we should be ok.  If I do really get stressed out I'll just pretend that I'm back in Florida on the beach.

Posting from Florida

All I can say is that Florida is awesome! It's about 75 and sunny and I think it's going to stay that way for the whole week; it's going to be really hard to head back to Indiana.  I know when we get back from break we are going to have to put some work into our service learning project.  I don't feel like it will be too difficult to get things done for the project, all we have to do first is agree on our goals as a group.  Our teacher thought our goals were a little low and needed to try and make our project a little bigger, while still keeping the same idea.  We will have two weeks to put the final touches on to our project when we get back so I don't feel like we will have any trouble at all.

Post pres

This last week we gave our presentation for our project.  I feel like it went fairly well; the only thing that really got attacked was the flyer.. this may have been my fault.  There were just a couple things that our TA really didn't like such as it wasn't clear that our event was for the Boys and Girls Club.  I can correct this pretty easy.  The only other thing that our TA really didn't like was that our goal.  We decided on a small goal so we knew we could reach it (around $100), however, Jasmine thought our goal should have been much higher (at least $500).  This could be really cool, but much harder to reach.  Besides these two things, our presentaion went really well and very few people had questions.

Moving Forward

I am pretty pleased with how things have been going for our service learning project.  I thought it would be some what difficult to figure out what we wanted to do and then get it together, but so far everything has been pretty simple.  We come up with a good idea last week that we are going to stick with and everyone seems on board.  I like our idea a lot because I think it will be really fun and at the same time we have the chance to give to some kids and help out our community.  I don't know how much money we will be able to raise with this event, but I think that anything will be appreciated; at least I hope so.

I am really pleased with our group; everyone does what they need to do and everything gets turned in on time and done well.  Our group just seems to be very easy to work with and our ideas are at least considered (even the bad ones).  Because our group works so well together I don't see why we will have any trouble getting our event done or have any trouble with our remaining speeches.  I don't think an A in the class will be very difficult so I'm really happy about.  I guess we will just see how the rest of the class goes.

What I've Learned So Far

Com 320 isn't the class I thought it was going to be.  I've taken other com classes before and it seem like we just went to lecture everyday and then regurgitated the information on the exam.  Even getting ready for the speeches in Com 114 didn't really teach me anything.  Com 320 has been different; yes we have lectures, but the real learning experience seems to be actually getting ready for our speeches.  Going to meeting and communicating with our small group has really helped me; I feel as though my future work environment will be very similar to what we are doing now.  Brainstorming to solve a problem (figuring out what we are going to do for our presentation), solving the problem (preparing the presentation), and then finally giving the delivery sounds just like what people have described to me that engineers do.  I hope that as the semester continues we will learn even more that we will one day be able to use.
